Haymarket
During the city's Spanish Colonial period, citizens would gather near San Fernando Cathedral to sell produce and livestock. The area, known as Haymarket, also became famous for the chili-like stews served by local women who were fondly referred to as "Chili Queens." Today, NIOSA honors the city's early, entrepreneurs with it's own Haymarket area featuring booths that include: Maria's Tortillas (the famous, hand-patted tortillas), Gorditas, Puffy Tacos, and Beef Fajitas.
Amid the colorful banners and covered wagons, visitors can dance to conjunto music - a favorite, traditional, regional sound with origins in Mexico.
